One of the primary tools I recommend for improving marriage relationships is keeping a gratitude journal for your spouse and your marriage.
Whether or not your marriage is amazingly wonderful, or it is having troubles, keeping a gratitude journal will help you to renew your love for your spouse.
The challenge is to write something in your marriage gratitude journal every day for the next 30 days! Will you join me in this challenge? Over the next few days I will be giving you some additional tips on journaling to make it easier and more impactful for you.
So, what is the big deal about keeping a journal? I expect you’ve often been told to be thankful for what you have when something awful happens. Research has shown that being thankful is a beneficial habit. An increasingly popular way of improving ourselves is keeping a gratitude journal.
Here are five additional reasons to keep a gratitude journal:
Changing Thought Patterns: Negative emotions can have a negative effect on your physical health. This can occur when you are feeling stressed, anxious or any other negative emotion. Thinking about people, events or things that you are thankful for helps to create positive thoughts and feelings and helps to reduce stress levels. It will also remind you that whatever happens to you, there is always something to feel thankful for.
Your commitment to keeping your gratitude journal on your marriage refocuses your mind on the positive elements, conversations and feelings that you have for your partner. This enables you to see more than just those negative thoughts that tend to fill your mind and dominate your thoughts when something negative happens.
As you start keeping and reviewing your gratitude journal, you will find your thought patterns changing. You will find that you start pushing boundaries and removing limiting beliefs that may be negatively effecting your marriage and your life. You will find that your mind opens to new possibilities and you gain in self-confidence and knowledge.
Improve Your Health: the fact that there is a mind-body connection means that by focusing on positive thoughts and feelings in your gratitude journal you are helping to improve your physical and mental health. Studies have shown that regular gratitude journaling can:
- Relieve stress and anxiety
- Improve sleep
- Gain perspective
Create Optimism: some days it’s just too hard to see the forest for the trees. During difficult times you may find yourself focusing on the difficulty. Those thoughts may nag at you consistently. As you take time to sit quietly and think about the things you are grateful for, you will find your negative thoughts diminishing and being replaced by positive thoughts.
Improved Sleep: no matter how much sleep you feel the need for, your mind and body do require a regular amount of sleep each night for optimal health, both physically and mentally. Keeping a gratitude journal is fun, calming and a positive activity that promotes happy thoughts and feelings. You will sleep more peacefully and have happier dreams by replacing worry and stress.
It’s Fun: keeping a gratitude journal should be a fun enjoyable experience; something you look forward to. It doesn’t matter whether you use a plain notebook or a really fancy one, you can jazz it up by using different colored pens or pencils, or even decorating the pages.
